Bruce Helander, Fmr. provost of RISD, artist (in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan, Guggenheim, LACMA & 60 other museums) and critic/curator.
Bruce Helander is an artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He is also a well-known curator and art critic. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and recently won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts.
Helander arrived in Palm Beach in 1982 from New York City, where he published Art Express magazine. He quickly established a cutting edge gallery on Worth Avenue that thrived for thirteen years. During that time he opened a second gallery on West Broadway in New York City. He was also a commissioner for ARCOM in Palm Beach and the vice-president of the Worth Avenue Association. He is active in the south Florida art scene and was on the board of directors at the Armory Art Center and later was the Director of Exhibitions there.
City Link magazine called Bruce Helander “Arguably the most recognized and successful collage artist in the country...” and Kenworth Moffett, former director, Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale said in Gold Coast magazine that “If there was a Pulitzer Prize for collage, Helander would surely win it.”
His work is in over fifty museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles.
His collages appear in Jazziz, The New Yorker and Palm Beach Illustrated magazines, among others.
He has written extensively on contemporary art and has written over 150 published reviews. He has an enthusiastic following for his monthly columns in Art of the Times magazine, Art and Living magazine (Los Angeles) and ARTnews. Star Group International just published his book of reviews, titled Learning to See—An Artist’s View on Contemporary Artists from Artschwager to Zakanitch, of forty of his favorite reviews.
As a curator, Helander has coordinated over eighty exhibitions of contemporary works. He has organized one-man shows for legendary artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, John Chamberlain, Duane Hanson, Larry Poons, Jules Olitski, Dale Chihuly and Kenneth Noland, among others. Helander’s written observations about art are unusual in that very few art writers are also artists—in this case, with an academic background, extensive gallery and publishing experience and regular exhibit of his work.

The Neumünster Abbaye is one of thecity of Luxembourg’s most important historic sites and is now a prestigiousexhibition space.

Peter Ciccariello is an interdisciplinary, cross-genre artist, poet, and photographer. His work is an experiment of language and text co-existing in 3-D digital environments. He works at the boundary between order and chaos, meaning and incoherence, logic and absurdity.
Recent work has been exhibited at amongst other places, Harvard University in Boston, MA, MOCA The Museum of Computer Art in New York City, Brown University, Providence, RI, Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts, NJ, and at the Abbaye de Neumünster, Cloître, Luxembourg.

Brian O'Malley recieved a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from the University of Rhode Island in 1995. He continued with his formal education at the Massachusetts College of Art, taking classes in film studies, focusing on the connections between Alfred Hitchcock and Edward Hopper. After traveling the country and spending extensive time in the Southwest, Brian then decided to head down to the University of Miami to pursue a Master of Fine arts degree in painting. The light and energy of the tropics had a profound influence, as Brian moved from crude abstract works influenced by DeKooning and Rauschenberg to symbolic figurative pieces influenced by German neo-expressionism and Latino Symbolists like Arnaldo Roche-Rabell and Ignacio Iturria.

September 7, 2009, – NEW YORK - Amidst a glass-walled gallery space at 679 3rd Ave (at the corner of 43rd St.), thirty artists and thirty out-of-work professionals will participate in Recession Art Sale, an art and commerce event in the center of Manhattan from September 17 – October 10, 2009.

out-of-work professionals

679 3rd Ave (at the corner of 43rd St.), New York, NY

AFTER THE GOLD RUSH: A Bailout for the Rest of Us, Recession Art Sale will host a diverse group of artists and sellers. The objective is to create income, comment on current shifts in the market economy, and foster a sense of community amongst artists, sellers, and buyers. Unemployed individuals affected by the current economic recession will be engaged as sellers to market the works on exhibit.

Artists will include: Noah Baen, Matthew Beall, Gene de Bartolo, Michele Brody, Peter Cicariello, Thom Corn, Carla Cubitt, Shanee Epstein, Ekterina Existart, Mark Grimm and Amy Cheatle, Karen Gunderson, Janusz Jaworski, Elanit Kayne, KK Kozik, Lorenzo Pace, Gila Paris, Susu Pianchupattana, Yulia Pinkusevich, Thaddeus Radell, Mike and Sherry Rader, Robin Ross, Rafael Rodriguez, Barnaby Ruhe, Charles Seplowin, Frank Shifreen, Lucy Slivinski, Tiffany Sum, & Lane Twitchell.

Hosting the event is Anita Durst’s nonprofit arts organization, Chashama, which has worked successfully with conceptual artist and Executive Producer of Recession Art Sale, Elanit Kayne. In 2002, Kayne’s Times Square installation, "All I Want for Christmas is Nothing: An Experiment in Value", considered sellers’ and buyers’ notions of the relative worth of objects.

Kayne partners with Co-Producer Frank Shifreen, founder of the Gowanus Art Canal Project, to create the Recession Art Sale gallery for 30 top-selling international artists. Shifreen, the New York partner of www.cultureinside.com, an award-winning exhibition site currently available in French, German and English, is hosting the online gallery for the project. Marketing and management consultant and graduate of the Park School of Communication at Ithaca College, Sarah Vaynerman, joins the project as Director of Operations and Marketing.

A multi-channel outreach to sellers was conducted through the use of print and online advertising, job opportunity sites, and social media in order to attract an eclectic group of qualified applicants. While some sellers have a background in the arts (a former employee of the Whitney Museum, Art History graduates), other qualified sellers include former IT workers and teachers and will receive art consultation training. Positions are still available.

Chashama was founded by Anita Durst in 1995 with the central purpose of keeping artists in New York by giving them the space to create. Durst realized that the lack of affordable space was the greatest threat to sustaining a diverse, dynamic, and provocative cultural environment in New York City. Her strategy to address this was to find a way to connect artists with vacant real estate, redistributing the untapped resources available in New York’s urban landscape by partnering with private and corporate property owners. Chashama has converted more than 40 locations, giving 7,500 artists access to subsidized space, which supported approximately 10,000 public presentations for over 500,000 viewers.
